WSFC school System Opiod Report

WS/FCS is committed to providing prevention and intervention services to students suspected of using unauthorized substances. The district collaborates with school-based mental health providers and community partners for referrals to support the adolescent use of unauthorized substances. This also includes our ongoing commitment towards prevention by way of parent and community engagement events.
In the Fall of 2024, this partnership trained approximately 35 students in the implementation of Stanford evidence based program, Healthy Futures and Safety First. Additionally, two schools piloted an alternative response to substance use infractions by replacing traditional punitive measures with in-school interventions. As part of this pilot, 98 students participated in evidence-based curricula during in-school suspension (ISS). These programs focused on education, reflection, and harm reduction, supporting the district’s shift toward restorative practices and student-centered intervention.
In Spring 2025 our Substance Use Prevention Team reached 694 students across Parkland HS, Carver HS, Flat Rock MS, and North Forsyth High School through targeted educational sessions on opiates/opioids, cannabis, alcohol, and vaping. Post-survey data showed increases in student understanding of addiction risks and the dangers of early substance use. For example, Naloxone awareness rose to 55%, and belief in the myth that vapes are safer than cigarettes dropped substantially after the sessions. These initiatives, in collaboration with community partners, reflect our commitment to a holistic and equitable approach to student wellness.
