Community Garden

Growing hearty relationships and nourishing our neighborhood

The community partnership with the SG Atkins CDC was also established by the Health and Wellness committee to create an opportunity to foster relationships between Seniors and Youth by bringing them together in the gardening atmosphere to help raise awareness to the city of the re-opening of the SGA Community Gardens, and the many ways the use of the garden could enhance their families. The Twenty’s efforts were focused on sharing clear, accessible Community Health Messaging about better health through gardening and the food we eat and utilizing the Youth community and Workforce Development committees was the way the message was spread.

Community Garden Outreach Sites

A highlight of this initiative was the involvement of the outstanding young leaders that showed us doing this work would be rewarding and beneficial to the whole community. The participating community members were Jordan Elijah King, Joel Hurt, Jasimine Crockett, Joyce Victorian, Marquea Heath, Fleater Carpenter, Malik Carpenter. They canvassed the city to make connections with assisted living establishments, local Barber shops, plasma Centers, food banks, churches, and the vaccine team with the FCHD and WFBH, inviting them to share in the gardening experience with them. Our goal was to meet people where they were.

Youth Leadership and Seniors in Action

One nursing homes that was thrilled to share in the collaborative effort of making a youth gardening buddy was The Danby House, located on Bolton Street. Their 5 Senior participants were excited for the opportunity to spend time in the sun in this new experience of connecting with our young people. After a successful summer of harvesting cucumbers, squash, peppers, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes they were taught the fundamentals of farming, and we donated the produce to the garden market.
